# What is Portia?

Portia is a tool that helps people handle civil disputes in England and Wales when they are representing themselves. It helps you organise your evidence, understand where your case stands, and prepare the documents the court process involves. It is built for litigants in person and for small businesses dealing with civil matters on their own.

Portia's job is to take the parts of self-representation that are about structure and organisation, gathering evidence, keeping track of dates, laying documents out clearly, and make them more manageable.

## What Portia is not

This is the most important thing to understand before you use it.

* Portia is not a law firm.
* Portia does not give legal advice.
* Portia does not tell you whether you have a case, how strong it is, or whether you will win.
* Portia is not a substitute for a solicitor or barrister.

If and when you decide to bring in a legal professional, that relationship is between you and them. Portia helps you prepare; it does not represent you and it does not act for you.

## Who it is for

Portia is for two kinds of user handling civil matters in England and Wales: individuals representing themselves, and small and medium-sized businesses dealing with a dispute. Family and immigration matters are outside its scope.
